Walk into any print shop and you’ll hear “digital printing” thrown around like it means one thing. It doesn’t. In sportswear, two distinct technologies dominate, and choosing wrong costs you quality, money, or both.

DTG (Direct to Garment): The Detail King

Think oversized inkjet printer meets T-shirt. Water-based pigment inks spray directly onto fabric fibers.

Where it shines:

  • Cotton and natural fibers
  • Complex gradients and photorealistic designs
  • Small batches (1-500 units) where setup costs kill screen printing

Where it fails:

  • Polyester dye migration—that white number on your red jersey? Comes out pink when the fabric dye bleeds into the white ink at 160°C cure temperature. I learned this the hard way on a $12,000 basketball uniform order.
  • Dark garment stiffness—the white underbase required for dark shirts feels like a thin plastic sheet, especially on large designs

Who should buy: Established factories doing 500+ units daily, cotton-focused, with capital reserves for maintenance (¥15,000/month).

Epson SureColor F3070: The Sweet Spot

PrecisionCore variable droplet technology (5.5pl-21pl) delivers detail that makes Kornit look coarse. Dual-head design runs white and color simultaneously—40% faster than single-head systems.

The hidden cost: Requires separate pretreatment equipment (add ¥80,000). White ink settles if idle >2 hours, demanding strict maintenance discipline. Printhead replacement: ¥8,000 every 18 months.

Our daily reality: 800-1,200 pieces, ¥0.5-0.8 ink cost per piece, and the flexibility to handle prototyping runs that would clog the Kornit.

Brother GTX Pro: The Trap for Beginners

At ¥450,000, it’s tempting. Innobella ink system uses 15% less ink than theoretical specs. Three-day training gets operators running.

The dealbreaker: HD mode takes 2-3 minutes per A4 piece. For perspective, that’s 20-30 pieces per hour vs. Kornit’s 350. Narrow color gamut (~85% Pantone) fails on fluorescents. Weak white coverage requires 2-3 passes on dark garments, destroying hand-feel and profit margins.

My advice: If your daily output is under 300 pieces, outsource to a factory with industrial equipment. The Brother will limit your growth and frustrate your customers.

1. RGB vs. CMYK Mode Mismatch

White ink specifics: Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) particles at 0.2-0.3μm clog nozzles easily. Without circulation systems (auto-clean every 30 seconds), you’re replacing ¥8,000 printheads quarterly. White ink costs 3-4x color ink (~¥1,000/liter) and constitutes 40% of material cost on dark garments.


Part 6: Certifications That Actually Matter (And Ones That Don’t)

  • Substrate: 100% waterproof nylon (zero adhesion)

Cost reality check: 100-piece cotton DTG order (A4 full color) runs ¥50/unit all-in. Screen print breaks even at 300-500 pieces. Below that threshold, digital isn’t just better—it’s the only profitable option.
